In this week we will be exploring how we express ourselves in abstract work through the use of colour.
We will start with a review of some of the basic concepts in colour theory, then complete some colour mixing exercises.
Finally we will create some paintings exploring some ideas in how to use colour.
Materials for this week:
For this week you will need:
A selection of acrylic paint and brushes including the following colours if you have them. Cadmium red, green and black and white. Please also have your other paints available.
A selection of drawing and line making tools. Pencils, crayons, oil pastel. Tools for drawing lines with and in paint.
Cheap drawing paper or your sketchbook.
Mixed media, watercolour or acrylic paper in various sizes.
Before I demonstrate the exercises I will take you through a review of the basic concepts in colour thoery. Then I will be demonstrating the exercises and providing guidance on the day. Again, the PDF below has the instructions for the exercises during the session. You may wish to have this to hand either on screen or printed at the session.
This week’s Pinterest board is a selection of abstract work with a focus on exploring colour and how different artists use colour. You can either view the images below or click here to go to the board in Pinterest.
Here are the demonstration videos from the teaching session. This first video is for the exercise in exploring colour mixing and creating colour harmonies.
The second video shows me creating two paintings. The first uses analogous colours, the second uses the colour harmony technique.
Finally here is the full recording of the teaching session from Monday.
Here are some sketchbook journal ideas for the next week. Feel free to do as much or as little as you want.
