Getting Started with Line

Topic Outline.

This first week we begin by exploring line. Looking at different ways and materials for making line.

We will play with drawing as many different lines as possible and experiment with creating interesting surfaces to work on. Part of this module will include exploring what line your “internal image maker” wants to make.

We will create some small paintings using only line.

Materials for this Week.

For this week you will need:

A selection of drawing and line making tools. Pencils, crayons, oil pastel. Tools for drawing lines with paint and in paint.

A selection of acrylic paint and brushes.

Cheap drawing paper or your sketchbook.

Optional : mixed media, watercolour or acrylic paper in various sizes.

I will be demonstrating the exercises and providing guidance on the day. To help you follow along more easily, the PDF below has the instructions for the exercises during the session. You may wish to have this to hand either on screen or printed at the session.

This week’s Pinterest board is a selection of abstract work showing lots of different ways of incorporating line, from sketchbook play to finished paintings. You can either view the images below or click here to go to the board in Pinterest.

Here are the demonstration videos from the teaching session. This first video is for the exercise where you are exploring making line using a variety of approaches. In the video I am demonstrating how to create different marks and lines using a variety of tools and brushes.

Here is the second demonstration of making small studies on paper using line.

Finally here is the Zoom recording of the teaching session from Monday.
