I spent some of the weekend preparing for teaching later today. It's the first session of my new online Art Group, 8 sessions over 8 weeks that make up an introduction to abstract painting course. The programme is designed to be flexible enough so that people can sign up for individual sessions as well as the whole course. While I am feeling positive about being able to keep teaching and in finding a way to bring art to people in their homes when lot of art groups can no longer meet, I'm also noticing my discomfort in talking about this. I know lots of people are struggling with so many different experiences: elderly relatives who are at risk, money or work concerns, friends or people close who are key workers. They may be scared for their own health and well being. I find myself thinking about how I am balancing the desire and need to keep doing things that alleviate my anxiety, frustration, boredom, fear, anger (the list of feelings is so long). A need for structure and also not to lose touch or contact with core values in my life. My art, how to be an artist. How to support other artists in their self expression. How are these things relevant when accounting our ongoing challenge as a society. Day by day? Little by little, with kindness compassion and care. Art is a place I can connect with others, support and be supported, find connection to myself and still find joy in creativity.
