About the exhibition
Intervals brings together a new body of abstract oil and mixed-media paintings made during 2026.
The work began with a desire to make work that was less polite and to move away from compositional structures that had become familiar. Rather than abandoning those structures entirely, the paintings test what happens when they are loosened, fragmented or interrupted. Colour becomes more assertive, while areas of density and activity sit alongside quieter intervals where the eye can pause.
The paintings developed through a physical and responsive process. Oil paint has been layered and scraped back; canvases have been rotated; collage, fabric and drawn marks interrupt painted surfaces. These moves have allowed the paintings to develop through asymmetry, disruption and unresolved tension, rather than being guided back towards a familiar compositional structure.
Although the work grows from increasingly confident choices, it is not intended to direct the viewer towards a single meaning. The paintings are open-ended: they may surprise, bemuse or slightly unsettle, while leaving room for people to notice their own responses and associations.
The exhibition includes large recent oil paintings alongside smaller, quieter mixed-media works that act as a counterpoint. Together, they reveal a body of work in transition, moving towards something less contained and more willing to remain unresolved.
