Live Studio Play Session: Gel Plate
A playful, exploratory two-hour studio session using gel plate printing to build layered surfaces, generate marks, and introduce chance and responsiveness into your work.
This session is about using the gel plate as a tool for discovery — allowing prints, textures, and unexpected results to become material you can respond to and develop.
Who it’s for
Artists who want to expand their surface vocabulary and work more freely with process, texture, and layering.
Ideal if you:
enjoy mixed media or are curious about print-based processes
want to introduce more unpredictability into your work
are interested in building surfaces to paint or draw into
Suitable for abstract and semi-abstract artists at any stage. You don’t need to be an expert with gel plates — curiosity is enough.
What We’ll Do
30 minutes — Framing + gentle warm-up
We’ll start with a short check-in and a simple introduction to using the gel plate as a responsive, playful tool. I’ll offer a small number of prompts to help you let go of control and work with what emerges.
60 minutes — Studio time (camera off if you prefer)
You’ll work through a series of guided explorations focused on:
layering prints and marks
working with texture, pressure, and removal
responding to what appears rather than planning ahead
The emphasis is on making a range of surfaces and discovering what holds energy or interest.
30 minutes — Group conversation + reflections
We’ll close with an easy, supportive discussion, sharing observations about process, surprises, and how this way of working might feed into your ongoing practice.
What You Need
Basic gel plate materials — use what you already have:
gel plate
acrylic paint or printing inks
brayer
paper (plain cartridge, printer paper, or similar)
optional: stencils, textures, drawing tools
We'll keep it simple as this session is about exploration.
