Artist Statement

I am a mixed media, abstract artist, creating work that explores process, growth, and becoming, through minimalist abstract composition.
These abstract pieces invite quiet, personal interpretation.
Meaning emerges through contrast and balance rather than representation. The work is not about what is seen, but what is experienced.
Each piece becomes complete in the moment it resonates with the viewer, allowing its emotional content to shift and settle uniquely over time.

Artist Statement

Safia Button is an artist from London, UK, currently mostly working in acrylic and mixed media abstracts, collage and print-making.

In her abstracts she employs expressive mark making, high contrast and plenty of colour. She likes to create intuitively, responding to each mark as it’s made. In Mixed Media Study, one of a series, she used a restricted colour palette while combining it with gestural marks; maintaining open space while creating detail, interest and energy.

In her miniature collages, Safia enjoys exploring the concept of story-telling and its often fragmentary nature. She uses pieces of ‘found text’ from printed material to construct snippets or snapshots of an imagined story, where it is up to the viewer to create their own context or narrative. It is an invitation to ‘co-author’ the piece with the artist.

Artist Statement

I am Shelagh Musgrave, a Scot living in the Midlands. My work for this exhibition is influenced by my reflections on memories of what I observe and how I feel when walking in the Scottish Highlands. I am inspired by nature and land/seascapes and in my practice I experiment with materials, composition and colour to recreate a time and place. Many works begin on a working surface — used to test marks or remove excess paint while developing other pieces. In time this begins to reveal its own direction, at which point I start to be more deliberate in how I work, more carefully creating layers and texture with mixed media, all building towards the final layer. “Mistakes” and revisions are an important part of my work, helping to create pieces that have a history; other stories are hidden behind what is immediately visible to the viewer.
