Live Studio Play Session: Collage
A playful, exploratory two-hour studio session using collage to generate ideas, loosen habitual ways of working, and open up new visual possibilities.
This session focuses on collage as a way of thinking on the page — working with fragments, interruption, and juxtaposition to discover fresh starting points and unexpected relationships.
Who it’s for
Artists who want to introduce more play, experimentation, and flexibility into their practice.
Ideal if you:
feel stuck or repetitive in your work
want new ways to generate ideas without starting from a blank surface
are curious about using collage as part of an ongoing painting or mixed media practice
Suitable for abstract and semi-abstract artists at any stage. No prior collage experience needed.
What We’ll Do
30 minutes — Framing + gentle warm-up
We’ll begin with a short check-in and a simple collage-based warm-up to shift into a more playful, responsive way of working. I’ll introduce collage as a way of disrupting habits and opening new visual conversations.
60 minutes — Studio time (camera off if you prefer)
You’ll work through a set of guided collage explorations using prompts that encourage:
working with fragments rather than whole images
noticing scale, rhythm, and contrast
allowing composition to emerge through response rather than planning
The emphasis is on exploration and discovery, not finished outcomes.
30 minutes — Group conversation + reflections
We’ll finish with a relaxed, supportive discussion, sharing what you noticed, what shifted, and how collage might feed back into your wider studio practice.
What You Need
Simple, accessible materials — use what you have to hand:
paper, magazines, old books, or printed images
scissors or tearing by hand
glue or matte medium
optional: drawing tools or paint for responding on top
No specialist materials required.
