Live Studio Play Session: Colour
A focused, exploratory two-hour studio session designed to help you work more confidently and responsively with colour.
This session is about experiencing colour as an active material: noticing how it behaves, how it shifts in relationship, and how small changes can open up new possibilities in your work.
Who it’s for
Artists who want to deepen their understanding of colour through direct experience rather than theory.
Ideal if you:
feel stuck in familiar colour habits
want to loosen control without losing intention
are curious about how colour actually behaves in your work
Suitable for abstract and semi-abstract painters at any stage. No specialist colour knowledge required.
What We’ll Do
30 minutes — Framing + gentle warm-up
We’ll begin with a short check-in and a simple colour-based warm-up to shift attention away from decision-making and towards noticing. I’ll frame colour as something relational and responsive rather than something to “get right”.
60 minutes — Studio time (camera off if you prefer)
You’ll work through a small number of guided colour explorations using restricted palettes and simple prompts. The focus will be on:
mixing for tone, weight, and luminosity rather than “new colours”
noticing dominance, tension, and balance
responding to what emerges rather than correcting it
This is quiet, spacious studio time — exploratory rather than outcome-led.
30 minutes — Group conversation + reflections
We’ll close with an easy, supportive discussion, sharing observations about what surprised you, what felt challenging, and what you might take back into your ongoing practice.
What You Need
Simple materials — use what you already have:
a small selection of paints (acrylic is fine)
white paint (essential)
paper, card, or small boards
brushes or tools you enjoy working with
palette or mixing surface
Keep it light — this session is about exploration, not finished work.
